About Me

I’m not sure if this is an “About” page, or a personal manifesto.

I’m Laurel. I’m an Art Director, and a geek. I love cartoons, 1970’s rock and roll, drawing, video games, comics and sewing.

I learned to sew when I wee. My mom was a Home Economics teacher, and taught me to cook and sew. I fought against the sewing for a long time, getting frustrated easily by the learning process. But as I got older, I began to appreciate it more. My mom got me a sewing machine when I graduated college, and it has proved to be one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten. I’m so grateful she’s encouraged me to continue sewing. I would sit alone in my apartment and fight with what I was making until I’d get it right. Now, I’m excited to learn more, and constantly trying new (or I should really say old) couture techniques to really make pieces special.

I’ve made costumes before, mostly for Halloween, but in 2011 I went to my first Dragon*Con with a few girl friends of mine. Always up for a challenge, I decided I was going to make all my costumes. Somewhere around the middle of a corset, I realized that I should have been documenting everything I’ve done, but it was too late to start. I fell in love with the art of making a cosplay costume. Instead of hiding my geeky side, I’ve decided to embrace it. I’ve taken a vow to stay geeky.

A geek used to mean a freak, but Wikipedia points out “It is taken to be someone who is an enthusiast, often in things outside of the mainstream spectrum. It may also describe immersion in a particular mainstream interest to an extreme that is beyond normalcy”  [read the whole wiki entry here].
